Sumahi (Not) for Martin Benavente

There is a special election for Guam just around the corner (fa'na'an agupa').
Signs for different candidates are already appearing around the island, and mingling with those who are running in the general election in November.

In order to help prepare Sumahi for the upcoming election I decided that whenever we are driving around, and we see the political sign for a certain candidate, we would excitedly yell out his or her name. By chance, the candidate we chose was Martin Benavente, the former Mayor of Dededo and Sunshine supporter.

So now, whenever we pass one of his many signs, me and Sumahi yell out "MARTIN BENAVENTE!"

This post is in no way an endorsement of Martin Benavente for Senator, but only that its fun to hear Sumahi say his name.

Botosaikot

Sumahi loves motorcycles.

I have no idea why, but whenever she sees one, even if its not moving, she gets excited and yells out "Botosaikot!"

Here is the picture of Sumahi's first ride on a motorcylce (well, technically kind of a scooter/motorcycle). Her auntie Angela Santos gave her the ride during the DEIS protest last November at the ITC intersection.

Sumahi at the Dentist

Is this Sumahi auditioning for a role in a remake of the movie Marathon Man?

Or is this just her first trip to the dentist?

Si Dileep Rao Si Nene

Whenever Sumahi watches the movie Avatar and see's this actor Dileep Rao, she yells out "NENE! Ayugue Si Nene. Hafa bidada-mu Nene?"

For those who don't know Sumahi refers to me as "nene" which is a term used for a child or a baby, or to a loved one or someone who is precious to you. It is not commonly something used by children for their parents.

Apparently Sumahi thinks that I look like this guy in the movie. I can see some similarity with the beard, glasses and the hair. But, really?

Primu Dylan

Sumahi love watching this video of her cousin Dylan jump off the cliffs near Pagat Cave.

Everytime he leaps she starts to laugh in an almost insane way.

And once he hits the water and starts trying to swim to the rocks and gets knocked around by the waves, Sumahi laughs and speaks for the ocean by saying gravely "I am the sea, come here Dylan!"

J-Sumahi

Sumahi already speaks three languages, but I'm considering enrolling her in Japanese school to learn a fourth one, so that can improve her chances of becoming either a J-Pop star or an actress in Japanese movies.

I may have at one point though that this would be a ridiculous idea, but that was before I realized that at her age she can pick up languages very easily, and that she looks exactly like the little girl from the live action version of the Japanese film Grave of the Fireflies.

I would be more excited about this similarity in how they look, except for the fact that the girl from Grave of the Fireflies dies a very tragic death.

Sumahi's First "Standing" Protest

Sumahi has been to protests before, but never as an active standing participant.
The protest at the ITC intersection last week about the release of the EIS for the military buildup was her first.

Sumahi's New Favorite Movie

Since Sumahi was small, we had brought her to many different movies. There weren't any particular movies that she really likes, there might be parts of a movie that she likes but never enough to catch her attention for more than 15 minutes.

Instead of watching movies, Sumahi's favorite thing to do is to watch videos on YouTube, and the videos of an MTV of Coldplay, Shamu, and Dora the Explorer especially. She likes to see things that she knows, and would ask her daddy to find a video for her on YouTube. Some of the things she really loves are (other than the above mentioned): puppies, horses, guitars, monkeys, cars, and guns.

Since Sumahi loves monkeys and cars, I popped in "Speed Racer" in to the DVD Player for her last week. It had since became Sumahi's favorite movie. She is frequently asking "where's the monkey?" whenever the monkey is not on the screen.

Here's Sumahi's favorite part of the movie

Akli'e' the Master Blaster

We have a new addition recently to our family: Akli'e' Chan Bevacqua.

He was born on August 2nd at 4am in Sagua Managu. At birth, he was 7 lb. and 12 oz. and 21 in. tall. He is now currently 2 months old, and weigh 14 lb. and 6 oz. and 24.5 in. tall.

With Akli'e' in the house, Sumahi is frequently fighting for attention, and became even worse as the Terror that she already was. Although Sumahi is jealous of her little brother, there's no doubt that she loves him dearly, for she would always ask for Akli'e', asks to kiss and hug him, and loves to yell "Bula take' guini!" (There's a lot of poop) whenever I change Akli'e's diaper.

Though out the years, we had given Sumahi many nicknames, and the same goes for Akli'e'.

He is:
Sachin (Daddy's favorite cricket player)
the Master Blaster (describing the frequent and powerful pooping action)
the Sleeping Dragon
the Eating Monster
Chelu ('brother' in Chamorro)
La-E-E (the way Sumahi pronounces his name)
Huang Zhong (one of the Five Tiger General of Shu in the 3 Kingdoms Era of China)

Sumahi crying after I refused to give her my camera.
